Paws Off the Pavement: 4 Summer Safety Tips for Your Pup
As Georgia summers turn up the heat, it’s not just humans who feel the burn—our four-legged companions do too. Whether you're heading out for a neighborhood stroll or hosting an open house with pup-friendly vibes, keeping pets safe in the heat is a must. Here are four essential tips every dog owner should keep in mind:
1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Dogs need access to fresh, cool water all day long—especially when temperatures rise. Bring a travel bowl on walks and keep extra water bowls indoors and outside so your furry friend can stay refreshed.
2. Mind the Pavement
Here’s a startling fact: when the air is just 86°F, pavement can reach up to 135°F. That’s hot enough to burn a dog’s paws in under a minute. A good rule of thumb? Place the back of your hand on the sidewalk for 7–10 seconds—if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them. Stick to grassy paths or walk early in the morning or after sundown.
3. Never Leave Pets in Parked Cars
It takes only minutes for the inside of a vehicle to become dangerously hot—even with the windows cracked. Avoid unnecessary risks and leave your dog at home if you can’t bring them inside your destination.
4. Watch for Signs of Overheating
Excessive panting, drooling, weakness, or glazed eyes could be early signs of heat exhaustion. If your dog shows any of these symptoms, get them to a cool, shaded area, offer water, and call your vet if symptoms persist.
